About this deal

A Forest Owner Account - for those who own or manage a single property which contains forested land (or land which they wish to use for forest creation); or Navigate to Felling Licence Online https://fellinglicenceonline.forestrycommission.gov.uk/portal/user/login

Working across the wider Northeast and Yorkshire area, Northwoods currently hosts the Northwoods Innovation Programme funded by the Forestry Commission through the Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Funds (WiMFIF), part of the UK Government's Nature for Climate Fund. The Northwoods Innovation Programme has been established to accelerate innovative approaches and technology which improve the number and quality of woodlands in active management. As part of the Innovation Programme, Northwoods organises and hosts a wide range of events, including webinars and in person demonstration events, that communicate innovative ideas and tools to stakeholders that own or are involved in the management of woodlands. The Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot is developing a methodology to locate currently unmanaged woodlands which have the lowest barriers to management with the aim to engage woodland owners and ultimately bring more woodlands into management. Here we take a look at two of those projects in more detail. These studies were written by collaborators on the projects. HomeGrownHouse - Grown in Britain If you want to create a woodland plan, you should include all woodland on your property. How to produce your plan In August 2022, Sylva Foundation launched the new enhanced version of myForest to provide the latest in technology and guidance to sustainably manage forests, and unique support for the creation of new forests across Britain. While myForest has a new look and rebranded, there has been no impact on your stored data and information.Benefits to forest scientists are access to knowledge, information and data about many different woodlands. We are calling this project Forest Lab. Engagement Agreement You can find the tool in the myForest Platform, a focused GIS software allowing woodland owners and managers to map, plan, and manage their woodlands. myForest • home (sylva.org.uk) Screenshot of the myForest Woodland Assessor Throughout this project, the team has engaged with the Forestry Commission and other community forest organisations to ensure that the project outcomes are as practical and relevant as possible to bring the greatest amount of unmanaged woodland into management in the North East and Wider Yorkshire Area. Both projections EPSG:4326 and EPSG:3857 use the WGS84 reference system (this is a standard approximation model of the Earth's surface. EPSG:4326 coordinates are unprojected, giving you exact locations on the WGS84 spheroid (the latitude/longitude degrees which you may be familiar with). EPSG:3857 coordinates are projected onto a flat plane. This projection type is the standard used by web maps because the projection works fairly evenly across the globe. EPSG:27700 is the OS projection. It gives a nice consistent view of the UK but it is not advisable to use this projection outside the UK.

Designated areas or features should be indicated on one of the annotated maps within your plan. If a designation applies, please provide details. Magic Map

Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot - Reheat (renewable technologies) Ltd (re:heat)

Dave Biggs, WoodMizer UK Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot - Reheat (renewable technologies) Ltd (re:heat) Firstly, the Focus Area Pilot is developing a methodology that uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyse hurdles (such as slope, access, and proximity to markets) to the active management of woodlands. The methodology uses the Forestry Commission’s Managed Woodland Headline Performance Indicator dataset to identify unmanaged woodlands.

Features are an important part of any forest creation or management plan, ensuring each feature is mapped accurately is vital to developing an effective maps and plans which are appropriate for any range of desired activities. Felling Licence Online (FLO) is the Forestry Commission’s online felling licence application and management portal. The plan of operations which makes up part of the management plan means it is possible for land managers to plan for and be issued with a felling licence for up to 10 years of felling. Finally, further support and advice is provided to woodland owners by helping them evaluate their woodland against the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) using the myForest Woodland Assessor developed by the Sylva Foundation with the aim to produce a UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) compliant Woodland Management Plan.In our Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Funds projects blog post we gave a brief introduction into those 17 successful projects. For woodland holdings over 3ha, you can develop a plan using the Forestry Commission’s full Woodland Plan template, the Plan of Operations template, and your own maps. A grant is available to help fund the production of a woodland plan (Countryside Stewardship option PA3), where the full Forestry Commission template is used. Northwoods delivers practical support to those involved in the forestry, farming, and timber processing sectors as well as land and woodland owners. Our aim as a Forestry Sector Support Programme is to support stakeholders increase the flow of environmental, social, and economic benefits of trees, woodlands, and forests in a manner resilient to our changing climate.

Sub-compartments are individual creation and / or management areas outlined within the wider compartment and FMU. Following the devastating impacts of Storm Arwen, the second webinar 'An Introduction to Management Planning' was rearranged to allow us to answer queries regarding the impacts of Storm Arwen on woodland management along with guests from the Forestry Commission and Euro Forest. Further information on the remaining webinars can be found here: FREE Woods into Management Webinars – RDI Associates (ruraldevelopment.org.uk) Slide from webinar 1: Sustainable Woodland Management - how and why do woodlands benefit myForest for Education: the UK’s first woodland management planning application designed specifically for education. The Forestry Commission’s Land Information Search (LIS) is another map-based tool that allows you to search for information about land designations or features that might already apply to your woodland. Examples of these features include: Sylva Foundation is well-known for its innovative land-management platforms including the Woodland Manager tool in myForest (used by more than 6,000 owners and land managers), Woodland Wildlife Toolkit, Deer Manager, and the online auction platform NatureBid. This is a collaborative project between Forest Research and Sylva Foundation, an environmental and forestry charity. It is funded by the Defra Future Proofing Plant Health Programme. The next step of the pilot project is to help woodland owners identified in the focus areas use and understand the myForest Woodland Assessor and the benefits it can bring to the woodland and woodland owner.
